Living with Change
EcoScapes are patterns on the land that have developed over time through interactions between people and the natural environment. They include wildland habitats extending northeast from the busy urban areas of Metro Vancouver through the mountain communities of Squamish, Whistler, Pemberton, and beyond.
Like many densely populated areas worldwide, this region is facing increased habitat fragmentation and biodiversity loss caused by a rapidly expanding human footprint and the compounding impacts of climate change.
While some species can adapt, others lack the necessary capacity to cope and are becoming increasingly vulnerable to the rapid pace and spatial extent of landscape change in our region.
Land Stewardship
Protecting, connecting and restoring healthy landscapes is essential for the long-term resilience of ecosystems and is vital to our sense of place and connection to the natural world.
Ecological connectivity networks prioritize wildlife movement and the flow of ecological processes along established corridor networks that link fragmented terrestrial and inland water habitats.
By integrating ecological connectivity into conservation planning, these wildlife corridors offer a long-term strategy to increase the capacity of ecosystems and species to cope with and adapt to a dynamically changing landscape.
Connecting Landscapes & People
EcoScapes builds on the outputs and insights of applied research carried out as part of the Wildlife Connectivity Project. Explore what we have to offer, share your knowledge, and help to implement practical solutions that enhance ecological connectivity and resilience of wildland habitat.
